Google Backlink Checker
If you’ve been in the Google Webmaster Tools lately you’ve probably noticed an update in the link to your site section. Many webmasters report seeing a great increase in the number of links shown in Google Webmaster Tools, and Google has told us that those numbers are real. Using link:URL in Google still shows only a sample of all the backlinks to a site. This means that right now, the best way to check how many backlinks Google sees to your site is to use Google’s own backlink checker, available in the webmaster tools. For more information or link analysis it’s still better to use 3rd party backlink checkers.

They rank high because they have so many backlinks pointing to them with that anchor text. This means that the major search engines could be starting to put more weight on links than on content.
